Week One - Trey's Internship Blog
For my first week on interning, I had an overall positive experience. I was able to get introduced to the studio and into some projects quickly. A majority of my work involved editing existing designs per client's requests and then sending emails to confirm their approval or ask for feedback. I did get to work on a few projects that allowed creative liberties, mainly business cards.
The studio is somewhat small, with a reception desk, two work tables, a desk with two monitors, a main office, and an array of printers. I sit at the desk with the monitors, in the corner of the room. The main working area takes up a majority of the space, with enough room to move around and place printed materials. As an intern, I mainly work as a support to the organization, doing quick edits and design work to help the more experienced workers get bigger projects done. While I have learned a little about printing and the machines, I have mainly been situated on the computer, unless my advisor or fellow employees ask for my help.
Highlights of my week included working on potential business cards designs for Blue Ridge Quick Print, allowing me to experiment and focus on my own design style. It also is exciting to finally get to work in the real world and design for clients
Problems included a few clients with unclear instructions or confusing notes on what they wanted. Usually it would take a little back and forth to get an idea of what they wanted and a few drafts and revisions to get their final desired design.
Finally, some issues I ran into involved beginning to interact with clients, and the process of emailing them or taking calls. Another issue involves how quickly I got into the design process and processing work orders, which was a lot to start out with and could get overwhelming, but eventually slowed down.
